Exceptional and unusually large 18th century Rococo Musical Longcase Clock. Masterfully carved three-part case in the refined Scandinavian Rococo taste, finished in a classic blue and white original color with an distressed patina. The architectural hood, topped with a carved finial and pierced fretwork, houses a rare musical movement boasting a 15-bell carillon and an additional striking bell. The white enamel dial is accented with Roman hour numerals and Arabic minute markers, featuring elegant pierced gilt hands. The movement is proudly signed on an embossed brass plaque: “Christopher Balke (1750 - 1799), Copenhagen.” A rare marriage of mechanical complexity and sculptural elegance. This is a magnificent example of 18th-century Danish horology. Ca 1770 Denmark.
Good condition with wear consistent with age and use. The three-part case has been professionally dry-scraped to reveal a beautiful and authentic original finish. The white enamel dial exhibits fracturing and localized "spidering" typical of period enamel. The brass repoussé plaque is well-preserved with crisp signature details. The movement is sold "as is." We recommend a professional cleaning and calibration to ensure accurate timekeeping and musical performance.
